Announced during its Galaxy Unpacked event on January 14, 2021, Samsung announced their next flagship phones! Those are the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra.
What’s New With the Galaxy S21 Ultra?
The Ultra is BACK for a third time with the S21 Ultra! It carries a cool looking camera bump on the top left side. (The Phantom Black color makes the bump look svelte!) That isn’t without reason though: it carries a quad rear camera system. It consists of a 108MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and two telephoto cameras (10MP periscope with 10x optical zoom and 10MP with 3x optical zoom). You still get the same 100x Space Zoom that’s now paired with laser autofocus. There’s also a 40MP front camera to get really detailed selfies!
The S Pen is Now Here!
Unlike previous Galaxy S phones, the S21 Ultra gets support for the S Pen! If you’ve always wanted the note-taking experience from the Note, you can now get it here too! Sadly, it’s mainly an optional accessory (for $40) and you need a way to store it, unlike the Note series. (Samsung will gladly sell you a case with an S Pen slot for $70.) You also don’t get the Bluetooth and gesture control functionality that you have from the Note phones.
The Most Powerful of Them All
You get the new Gorilla Glass Victus glass on both the front and back here. We also have either the Snapdragon 888 processor (US) or the Exynos 2100 processor (other regions). The S21 Ultra gets the best display of the three new S21 phones: a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display. This display has a 3200×1440 resolution and an Adaptive 120Hz refresh rate (range from 10-120Hz). We also get the biggest battery of the lineup with 5000 mAh with 45W fast charging and 15W wireless fast charging. Unfortunately, we don’t get the charger (or the wired earphones). There’s also the usual IP68 water resistance and the new Wi-Fi 6E which can utilize the 6GHz band for better Wi-Fi.
What About the Galaxy S21 and the S21+?
Good question! The S21 and S21+ are taking a different approach this time around. Both now carry 1080p AMOLED displays (instead of the 1440p ones on the S20 and S20+). We have a 6.2-inch display on the S21 and a 6.7-inch display Good thing we get the Adaptive 120Hz display with a range of 48-120Hz. We also get different materials for the back between these two: glass on the S21+ and plastic on the S21. (I am not calling it glasstic!)
Despite those changes, the S21 and S21+ get the same Snapdragon 888 / Exynos 2100 processor. There are different battery sizes present: 4000 mAh on the S21 and 4800 mAh on the S21+. I’m shocked to see a really small
Pretty Good Cameras!
For the cameras on these phones, both get a triple rear camera setup. They consist of a 12MP wide camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera. We also get a 10MP front camera for those cool selfies!

It’s really interesting to see these new phones and how much they change with each iteration. Thankfully, I still stay cheap. We only have one smartphone at home and update it every two years (not by choice lol).
