Samsung Made Foldables Mainsteam. Now It Should Aim To Win.

It’s been almost 7 years since the first commercially available foldable phone came into the market. Besides different form factors and software improvements, I still see a lot of the same-looking smartphones in the wild. It’s not that “a phone that folds” as a concept doesn’t work. Who doesn’t want a normal phone that unfolds into a larger canvas or a normal phone that folds into a smaller one? Even if a different company was first, I’m positive that Samsung is the company that made foldables mainstream. With all the competition out there making bigger waves, it’s about time that the Korean brand aims to win.

The Competition is FIERCE

While Samsung has been making incremental changes to its large foldable, other phone makers have been turning up the heat! From HONOR’s stunningly thin Magic V3 (and somehow an even thinner upcoming foldable in the Magic V5) to OPPO’s slim and compact Find N5, the Korean giant feels like they’re mostly resting on its laurels.

While that’s the current state of foldables, I think there are some things Samsung can do to DOMINATE the foldable market once again:

A Significant Redesign to the Fold

The most obvious thing Samsung can do is to make a significant change to its Z Fold. Its large foldable has remained the same for the most part, doing incremental upgrades to how it looks. While the closest thing to that is the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition that came out in South Korea only, it would be best if Samsung brings that innovation globally.

Make Foldables Feel Like True Flagship Phones

Like the design, Samsung pretty much just made incremental changes with its foldables in terms of specs. I think the current Z Fold6 only supports 25W wired charging and its cameras are still below what the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra are capable of. Hopefully the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in July will put this to rest, especially with the Ultra branding being used.

Make. Foldables. Cheaper.

As much as I appreciate the prestige of foldables being in flagship territory for years, it’s still out of reach for most people. Even if other brands have tried to make foldables cheaper, it usually comes at the cost of hardware and software that isn’t on par. It’s about time Samsung puts its foot down and make some effort to make foldables (or at least the Z Flip form factor) accessible to more people.

Wouldn’t you want a Galaxy A Series flip phone?

Those are just my thoughts on what Samsung can do to make a bigger push and win the foldable phone race. What do you think Samsung should do? Sound off in the comments.
