iflix has been making waves recently because of adding more movies and TV shows to their library without losing a lot of them. (Unlike a certain competitor which I will not name here. Haha) Over the course of this year, more and more shows are added with some being EXCLUSIVES to iflix!
If you haven’t watched in a while (guilty as charged!) or you’re just starting out, here are 10 shows/movies to watch on iflix!
Mr. Robot
If you can only afford to watch ONLY ONE SHOW at its entirety, THIS IS IT. Mr. Robot is created by Sam Esmail and stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson and Christian Slater as Mr. Robot. This really provides a realistic look at how a hacker and his team manages to battle the largest conglomerate in all of history. I’ll just leave it at that because telling more will just spoil the plot for you. I don’t want to deprive you from that.
Sadly, I only got to watch Mr. Robot. The rest of the shows/movies on this list are new releases from iflix.
TrumpLand
I was initially curious as to what this is because of the title. With Trump winning the US Presidential Elections this year, it is only fitting to check out this documentary from Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore.
The film dives deep behind the lines of hostile TrumpLand territory with his daring, profound, and uproarious one-man show. When the show gets banned from the first town they tried, Mike moves on to an even bigger community of Trump supporters in the ironically-named Clinton County, Ohio.
Performed, shot, and edited just weeks before the 2016 election, this heartfelt, honest, and hilarious concert film is essential election viewing for a divided America. Entertaining, outraging, and informing in equal measure, no matter who you’re voting for, this movie has something for everybody.
Voltes V
This is for the animé lovers and 90s kids who are feeling nostalgic. Voltes V may be one of those shows that follow the Power Rangers formula. (I really don’t know which show is the originator of the combined robot formula.) All I know is that this show was the one that exposed me to that. Yes, even before Power Rangers.
The Legend of the Blue Sea
I have heard of this Korean drama from my friends and relatives who are really raving on this show. What on earth is this about, you ask?
Directed by Jin Hyok and written by Park Ji Eun, The Legend of the Blue Sea tells the story of a genius con artist (Lee Min Ho, Boys Over Flowers) who meets theworld’s last remaining mermaid (Jun Ji Hyun, My Sassy Girl) as she tries to adapt to life on land. Past and present collide as the pair discovers a connection in their past, unfolding into a charming fantasy drama that leaves viewers believing in fate and destiny. Together with veteran actors Song Dong Il, Mun Soo Ri, Hwang Shin Hae, Na Yong Hi, Choi Chong Wu, the star-studded cast will delight Korean drama fans of all ages across the region.
And Then There Were None
I don’t really now what to expect with this one. The title alone just intrigues me.
The miniseries is based on Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were
UnREAL
I’m curious as to what this show has to offer. When I first saw this, I thought it was about TV production or something. Much to my surprise, it’s more than that.
UnREAL, from A+E Studios®, explores behind-the-scenes drama and manipulation surrounding the production of “Everlasting” – set against the backdrop of a fictional reality dating show. The first season received positive reviews and critical praise for its satirical take on reality dating shows that don’t pull punches. Season 2 follows Constance Zimmer, as she reprises her role as the show’s Executive Producer, alongside Shiri Appleby as her unstable and morally conflicted assistant. The dynamic duo is back, scheming and fueling controversy for the sake of TV ratings.
Roadies
I’m happy to see studios do some original series just for streaming services such as iflix. Despite their hesitant nature, they allow creators to do these kinds of unconventional shows. Without further ado, here’s the synopsis:
Created by Oscar-winning writer-director Cameron Crowe and produced by J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot Productions, Roadies is an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of “roadies” who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed on the road. The series chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music’s unsung heroes and puts the spotlight on the backstage workers who put the show together while touring for the successful arena-level group, The Staton-House Band. Luke Wilson (Old School, Enlightened) stars as the band’s tour manager opposite Screen Actors Guild® Award nominee Carla Gugino as the production manager. Their unique personal and professional relationship is forever crashing and colliding as they guide the daily events of the band and crew of roadies.
The Avengers
Do you need some catching up to do with the Marvel movies? Are you just getting started? Do you need a reason to watch those Marvel movies your friends keep pestering you to do? Then watch this movie. Despite the usual flaws and tropes of superhero movies, seeing the heroes team up for the first time is magical. I really mean that. The Avengers is simply a good fun ride! Although you might need to watch some Phase 1 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’ll be all worth it.
Fargo
Do you still have any doubts about the strength of iflix’s content? Look no further than the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winning TV series, Fargo! Both seasons are now on iflix for your viewing pleasure. Here’s the synopsis:
The second installment of Fargo, which premiered in the U.S. on FX October 12 at 10 PM ET/PT, follows a young State Trooper (Patrick Wilson) and his Sheriff father-in-law (Ted Danson) as they investigate a grisly case involving a local crime family and a major mob syndicate, and a small town beautician (Kirsten Dunst) and her husband (Jesse Plemons) who inadvertently get caught in the middle. Emmy® Award winning Executive Producers Noah Hawley, Joel & Ethan Coen, Warren Littlefield and John Cameron all return for the new installment. Fargo is produced by MGM Television and FX Productions, with MGM Television serving as the lead studio.
Descendants of the Sun
Here’s another one for Korean drama fans out there! If you haven’t heard of this one, then your fellow Korean drama fans will smite you for it. Here’s the synopsis:
Shi-Jin (Song Joong-Ki) is the captain of the special forces. He catches a motorcycle thief with Sergeant Major Dae-Young (Jin Goo). The thief is injured during his capture and is sent to the hospital. Dae-Young realises his cellphone was stolen by the thief and goes to the hospital to retrieve his cellphone.
In the emergency room, Shi-Jin meets Dr. Mo-Yeon (Song Hye-Kyo) for the first time. He falls in love with her immediately. Mo-Yeon mistakenly assumes Shi-Jin is part of thief’s criminal gang. He proves to her that he is a soldier with the help of army doctor Myeong-Joo (Kim Ji-Won).
Shi-Jin and Mo-Yeon begin to date, but due to their jobs their dates don’t go well. Shi-Jin takes an order to lead his soldiers on a peacekeeping mission to the country of Uruk. Meanwhile, Mo-Yeon becomes upset that she fails to become a professor due to a colleague’s privileged background. When Shi-Jin and Mo-Yeon meet again, they talk about their views on life and realise how different they are. Shi-Jin, as a soldier, kills to protect lives and Mo-Yeon, as a doctor, tries to save all lives. They say their goodbyes.
Eight months later, Mo-Yeon rebuffs the sexual advances of hospital chairman Suk-Won (Tae In-Ho) and as retribution is assigned to lead a medical team in Uruk. There, Shi-Jin and Mo-Yeon meet again.
