According to multiple sources, Globe Telecom is set to launch the next version of their Streamwatch device: the Streamwatch 2.

The new Streamwatch 2 will not look like this at all.

Globe Streamwatch 2 Details

The big difference between the Streamwatch 2 and the old model is the lack of Roku software. A yet-to-be-named device maker made this new Streamwatch set-top box. NTC already approved the new Streamwatch device as early as August of this year.

Here are the supposed features of the Streamwatch 2:

  • Android TV 8.0 Oreo w/ Google Assistant
  • LTE (acts as router)
  • 2 mic input (karaoke)
  • TV (possibly digital ISDB-T) and radio
  • 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM

There are fascinating things with this rumor. First off, it now runs Android TV (version 8.0 Oreo) with Google Assistant support. This means you can run most Android apps that can run well on the TV. Having LTE support makes all the sense in the world. The new Streamwatch device can now be the ultimate portable media machine. You can now bring it along with you in your travels within the Philippines!

The curious thing about this is the absence of Roku. Although the device felt more streamlined due to Roku, Globe may feel that they need more control of the device. I am not sure with this part though.

There were no details regarding how it looks, its price, and when it will be available. This will presumably be bundled with their Globe At Home plans or as an add-on to existing plans. If there are updates regarding this story, I’ll let you know through here.

What do you think of a new Streamwatch device? Do you own a Streamwatch or plan to get one? Is Android TV a viable platform for set-top boxes like this one? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!
