Despite 2020 bringing us a worldwide pandemic, we’re still getting an iPhone 12 event from Apple. After getting new Apple Watches and iPads during the Time Flies event, it’s now the iPhone’s turn. Here are the things we expect from this event.
4 New iPhones (including that Mini!)
For the first time, Apple is set to release four new next-generation iPhones with different screen sizes in this iPhone 12 event. The one model that kept its display size is the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 12 (successor to the iPhone 11). Meanwhile, the Pro models are getting a screen size bump (the 12 Pro goes up to 6.1 inches and the Pro Max now has a 6.7-inch screen). We might also be getting a new iPhone 12 Mini with a 5.4-inch display.
There was a weird rumor going around that the iPhone 12 mini will get a different B14 processor than the expected A14 Bionic chip. I don’t expect that to pan out unless the battery life will be a concern for that new smaller iPhone.
Yet Another Year of Focus For Cameras!
With cameras becoming the differentiator on most smartphones, the iPhone 12 lineup shapes up to improve in that aspect. We expect to get better wide and ultrawide cameras across the line. The Pro models will also get better telephoto cameras and add a LiDAR scanner that we first saw on the 2020 iPad Pro.
5G is Here and Qualcomm is BACK!
During the iPhone 12 event, we also expect the whole lineup to get 5G. The Pro models will be equipped with the necessary bands for mmWave and sub6 while the 12 and 12 mini will only get the latter.
I agree with this article from The Verge that 5G isn’t a selling point for these iPhones. Despite that, I think that this is great for the longevity of these new iPhones.
Are There Other Stuff in Store?
Yup! Besides the whole iPhone 12 lineup, we expect to see a cheaper HomePod Mini and new Apple-branded wireless chargers. The latter might utilize a name that was previously used on Mac chargers: MagSafe. The HomePod Mini could come with a nice $99 price tag for a cheaper way to get a good speaker from Apple.
