Cloudflare Releases 1.1.1.1 App!

I was going about my way through the internet when I came across an article from YugaTech about the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app. It made me curious as to what it is.

Well, Cloudflare, a company you may know as a content delivery network (CDN), made an app for the 1.1.1.1 initiative. 1.1.1.1 focuses on being the fastest and most private DNS server there is. Before I go any further, I feel like I have to explain some things.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is basically a dictionary for the internet. The actual internet doesn’t actually understand what google.com is. Our phones and laptops actually make a DNS request. It then goes to a DNS resolver that matches google.com with the appropriate way to get to the Google website.

A server that dedicates itself to matching the domain names to the appropriate ways is called a DNS Resolver. Your internet provider already has that set for you when you got your internet connection.

Why Make a New DNS Resolver?

Sometimes internet providers and other entities actually snoop on the websites you access. This makes it easier for them to target you with ads. Ever wondered why you got an ad for something you looked at an hour ago? That’s how they get you.

Cloudflare and APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) decided to make a new DNS Resolver that focuses on speed and privacy. Cloudflare has the network while APNIC has the IP address. It really makes a lot of sense for them to team up!

What Does the 1.1.1.1 App Do?
